Market fun at Groenvoer
MIDRAND - The clop of miniature horse hooves, a twit-twoo of a spotted eagle owl and the pounding of takkies in a Zumba dance demonstration.
These were just some of the sounds emanating from Groenvoer’s Christmas Country Market on 30 November. Community members enjoyed the fresh country air and stocked up on Christmas gifts at the many stalls. Books, meat selections, art, coconuts, jams, plants and collectors’ items were just a pinch of what was on offer.
Midrand SPCA, the Society for Animals in Distress, South African National Parks Honorary Rangers and Midrand Lion’s Club were some of the charities that set up stalls to raise funds for their organisations.
The stage was the centre of attention for most of the day as market-goers crowded around to see Dance-4-Fun’s display and a Zumba dance demonstration – which even saw community members join in the fun and dance around the stage.
LQ Stud’s miniature horse display gave the audience a thrill as the horses cleared jumps – which were almost as big as them.
Jonathan Haw of Eco-Solutions gave a talk on owls and held a spotted eagle owl, which the audience couldn’t get enough of.
He warned that the biggest threat to owls in Johannesburg’s northern suburbs was rat poison and said many owls were also hit by vehicles. He encouraged residents to build owl boxes, and said bat boxes were also a good idea in the Midrand and Kyalami communities as bats help to control the spread African Horse Sickness by insects.
Demonstrations of Karuna Yoga and the Pomeranian Club of Gauteng were also highlights on the stage and the entertainment line-up ended with screams of laughter in the Piñata smashing.
The next market will be held in May 2014.
