Emeris Waterfall campus hosts 'A day for empowerment and career exploration', giving students direct access to recruiters from leading organisations.

Hundreds of students were exposed to graduate programmes and connected with potential employers during the recent annual career fair: ‘A day for empowerment and career exploration’, hosted on the Emeris Waterfall campus.

The day was hosted by the campus career services team, to create a direct path for networking and job hunting in various industries. Students were also equipped with valuable job-seeking knowledge.

First-year Bachelor of Computer and Information Sciences honours student Dilan Naran said the career fair was a very enjoyable and valuable experience.

“I appreciated the number of organisations present that were seeking employees in roles that are relevant to my studies. The number of organisations present stood out, as there was almost not enough time to speak to all of them.

“I learnt that there are many organisations out there hiring in my field, which puts my worries related to the future job search at ease. My mission for the day was to have spoken to as many organisations as possible, and to have acquired networking connections to assist in furthering my professional career.”

The much hyped day was aimed at equipping students with the knowledge, connections, and confidence to take the next step in their future careers. 22 organisations, including PwC South Africa, Sage, Mecer Inter-Ed, and the Railway Safety Regulator, located within the Midrand area, offered hands-on practical guidance to students on what they will need when entering the employment sector.

Many students were appropriately dressed to impress possible future employers and spent the day making themselves known.

Career services specialist at the Emeris Waterfall campus Gcina Mgcina assisted students with preparing their CVs for the career fair beforehand. She also stated that employers are seeking employees with communication, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills, whilst being adaptable and willing to learn.

Boxfusion, one of the organisations present on the day, confirmed that approximately 40 third and fourth-year students showed interest in their graduate programmes.

“Preparing students for their future careers is a continuous goal,” concluded Mgcina, “which will be addressed with a structured engagement calendar including monthly or faculty-specific career talks, skills workshops (CVs, interviews, and LinkedIn), and industry panels aligned to different qualifications.”
