SPCA re-unites pet and owner
GLEN AUSTIN - While the rest of the world was on holiday over the festive season, Midrand SPCA staff had their eyes peeled – and good job they did.

On 4 January, inspector Theo Mokgatle, kennel manager Renny Malapela, general manager Elsje Naicker and volunteer Melusi Ndaweni successfully identified an animal that was reported as stolen three weeks earlier.
Naicker said, “A pet was brought into the SPCA for dipping. Ndaweni and Mokgatle immediately noticed that the animal resembled [one] that was reported stolen. Malapela scanned the animal for a possible microchip and one was found.”
Naicker then contacted Identipet (microchip identification for animals) for verification of the owner who was then contacted to collect the animal.
Naicker said, “Well done to all involved in re-uniting this animal with its rightful owner.”
She also said the SPCA encouraged pet owners to keep identification on their pets at all times.
Midrand SPCA was kept busy during the festive season, particularly on New Year’s Eve. Naicker said the SPCA was aware of 15 pets that were reported as missing, eight of which were run over by motorists.
Naicker knows of seven pets that were re-united with their owners, however missing pets were reported daily.
Naicker thanked the community for their support during the festive season, particularly with the many pet food donations. However, Midrand SPCA is still in urgent need of pet food. Community members can drop off donations at the premises at 6 Dale Road, Glen Austin.
