Kyalami site to reopen as Pikitup tackles remaining waste backlog

After Midrand residents and Ward 94 councillor David Foley voiced concerns about the dump overload and misuse of the Kyalami garden refuse site, Pikitup has finally decided to take action by closing the site for a clean-up.

The Kyalami garden refuse site had a three-day shutdown from May 19 to May 21 to clean it up after several concerns were raised by residents and the ward councillor regarding the site’s overload and misuse.

The site is set to reopen on May 22, after Pikitup management confirmed that clean-up operations have been progressing.

According to Ward 94 councillor David Foley, the site was initially expected to be closed only on Tuesday, but the volume of work required extended the closure into Wednesday and Thursday to allow teams to properly manage the backlog of waste.

The ward councillor was pleased about the clean-up.
“Happy, yes but the production line must be monitored like a well-oiled machine with constant checks and balances,” said Foley.
“The dump will open tomorrow again but there is still work to be done, probably another week on the one side but what is important, is that the balance of dropping off and cleaning of the site needs to work together every day,” said Foley.

According to Foley, the Pikitup management said residents are paying staff at the site to enter and offload which is completely unacceptable.

“Please do not offer money in this regard. If someone helps you and you give them a tip through gratitude, that is acceptable,” added Foley.

Pikitup spokesperson Muzi Mkhwanazi said that he is not aware of the clean-up taking place at the site, however, he will find out and confirm.

An update will be published with his response.
