Miss Earth down to earth
MIDRAND - Miss Earth South Africa finalist, Odirile Sepeng had a great day with pupils from Ebory Park Primary School.
Sepeng spent a morning planting trees and vegetables with Grade 4 pupils at the school. She told Midrand Reporter that the school had a rat problem. She said, “To avoid the vegetables being attacked by rats we will plant them inside bottles. I am excited to have spent the morning with the kids.”
Sepeng explained to the pupils that it was important to preserve the environment. “We have to plant trees so that we sustain our natural heritage, which is why we are planting indigenous trees today,” she said.
She said the gardening project aimed to create a social development and greening awareness in schools. “The best way to get the message across is to be practical and show pupils how to plant vegetables and trees, and the importance of doing so,” Sepeng added.
School principal, Floyd Malinga said the support by Miss Earth was appreciated. “Not only are they exposing our pupils to beauty with a cause such as Miss Earth, the project teaches pupils the importance of preserving our environment. We appreciate that Miss Earth has associated itself with our school through this programme,” he said.
