Call to donate blood this spring

MIDRAND - September is a month of celebrating the birth of new life.

It is also a month when all South Africans acknowledge and celebrate their heritage.

In a South African National Blood Service’s statement, it said “along with our strong heritage we have so much to be proud of and this pride is shown in many ways and among them is the pride of knowing you make difference to the lives of those in need”.

They said one donor’s blood could save up to three lives.

Donors are also urged to become regular donors. And with a minimum of four donations a year, one can be proud of being part of a “nation of doers”.

As the year draws to a close, potential donors are asked to commit to donating at least twice over the next four months so as to avoid any possible shortages that are traditionally experienced at this time of year due to the holidays.

To be a blood donor one has to be between the ages of 16 and 65, weigh more than 50kg, be in good health, lead a sexually safe lifestyle and have eaten a meal on the day of the donation.

Midrand has its own donor centre which is open for blood drives every Thursday between 8.30am and 6pm. It is located in unit 4 and 5 of Gallagher Place, on the corner of West and Richard roads. Currently, the services only has 3.3 days’ worth of blood stock.
