Cresset brings out the bling
MIDRAND - Bring out the Bling was the theme chosen for this year's Casual Day celebrations on 5 September.
The campaign’s aim was to create awareness and raise funds for people with disabilities.
It is only befitting that Cresset House, a residential and work facility for adults with intellectual disabilities, was one of the beneficiaries of the proceeds raised on the day. The home celebrated the day at its premises in Glen Austin, with fun and games in
the sun.
“This campaign has been very successful,” said Dipuo Morake, event organiser and social worker at the organisation.
“The funds raised by selling the stickers are shared among participating organisations that work with people with
disabilities.”
Morake hoped that the day itself would gain momentum and wished for greater government participation and support.
“We need to create awareness about any form of disability.
“I would like to see our communities joining hands with all the organisations that provide services to people with disabilities.
“It can be through voluntary work, going to a residential facility, helping to prepare meals and helping with stimulation.”
She also stated that families of those who were disabled could help by creating awareness in their neighbourhoods, and among friends and colleagues about caring for people with disabilities.
“Education starts at schools.
We must also teach our children about disability.
“Let them know from a school age what are the different kinds of disabilities and what they can do to help,” she said.
The stigma attached to disabled people is worrying for Morake, “When people visit Cresset House, they will ask if our residents are violent.
“People are amazed that our residents can sit and work in their workshops.
“I have also realised that corporations do not invest in people with intellectual
disabilities.”
The home has also called upon the Midrand community to sponsor its residents for their monthly needs.
