France and Portugal lead the race in Midrand United ballers’ World Cup predictions
With the 2026 Fifa World Cup underway, players from Midrand United FC have weighed in on who will lift football's biggest prize, with France and Portugal emerging as the top favourites among the ballers.
As the 2026 Fifa World Cup gets underway, young footballers from Midrand have already begun debating which nation will lift football’s most coveted trophy on July 19.
The Midrand Reporter visited Midrand United Football Club (MUFC) on June 12 to hear predictions from players across various age groups. Two countries emerged as overwhelming favourites among the local footballers: France and Portugal.
The historic tournament, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, kicked off on June 11 and is the largest Fifa World Cup in history, featuring 48 teams competing across 104 matches.

MUFC U16 striker Abishai Naidoo believes the title race will come down to either Portugal or France. “Portugal’s midfield is very good and they are excellent in possession. France, on the other hand, has players like Kylian Mbappé, whose speed and ability can change any game.”
Abishai believes Portugal’s squad depth could give them an advantage. “They don’t rely on one player. Bruno Fernandes, Vitinha, and João Neves are all world-class midfielders who support players like Cristiano Ronaldo and Rafael Leão. Portugal has stars all over the pitch.”
Fellow U18 striker and winger Bokang Movundlela also tipped France and Portugal to reach the final. “France has shown before that they can win the World Cup. They have Ballon d’Or contenders, Champions League winners, and league champions throughout their squad. Portugal winning it would also be special, because it would be a perfect way for Cristiano Ronaldo to end his international career.”
For U14 wing-back Khumo Mpuru, France and Spain stand out as the strongest contenders. “France has a lot of star power and their bench is packed with quality players.”
U16 defender Mariri Mogano echoed similar sentiments. “I think it will be either Argentina or Spain, but if not those two, France could take it. France has been strong in recent World Cups and they have a great squad.”

Not all players were convinced by the European giants though. U14 winger Imvano Maseti backed five-time champions Brazil. “Brazil has the type of players needed to win a World Cup. If Brazil doesn’t win it, then France will probably take it.”
U18 midfielder Tebogo Mojela also placed his faith in the South Americans. “For me, it’s between France and Brazil, but I think Brazil will win it. Players like Neymar deserve a World Cup and he has the talent to make a difference.”
Among the club’s senior players, support was split between Spain and Portugal. Senior striker Cliford Junior ‘CJ’ Sibanda believes Spain’s blend of youth and experience makes them favourites. “They’ve done it before and they have a great squad with players like Lamine Yamal, Mikel Merino, Fabián Ruiz, and Rodri, who have experience playing in high-pressure matches.”
Senior winger Lesedi Nemandalali was unwavering in his support for Portugal. “For me, it’s Portugal all the way. Cristiano Ronaldo deserves it and Portugal has been playing very well. I believe this could be their year.”
While opinions differed on whether France, Portugal, Spain, Brazil, or Argentina would triumph, one thing was clear from the discussions at Midrand United, local ballers will be following every moment of the month-long tournament with excitement.
