Dads step onto the field for Summerhill Preparatory’s Father’s Day celebrations

Fathers brought their A-games, celebrating themselves through sports on the school's sports ground.

As Father’s Day nears, Summerhill Preparatory hosted fathers to a day filled with sporting activities on their school grounds.

Because most fathers have a love of sports, the school focused on having the learners and fathers participate in soccer matches and athletics races, further strengthening the bond between father and child.

While the school used to host the event for fathers of learners in Grade 1 only, this year all grades in the preparatory school were included.

The principal of the school, Vanessa Singh, explained: “Summerhill is a community, and we want to include everyone in our events. Before, it was only exclusive for our Grade 1s, and the older learners did feel a little bit left out. So, now we opened it up to everybody, so that it can be a lot more inclusive. Some of our learners don’t have biological fathers, but were able to bring their father figures, so we also made the event inclusive in that sense as well.”

The event comes not long after the school celebrated Mother’s Day, creating a balance between both parents. The aim continues to be to strengthen the relations between children and their parents, even those that are not biological.

Singh shared her joy regarding the turnout. She added that this year the number of fathers attending went up to 150, which she says was beautiful.

One of the fathers who attended the event, Elwin Magerman, expressed how he feels about having the Father’s Day celebration hosted for them. “I think it’s awesome for us to get out of our offices, out of our normal routines, and just spend a little bit of time with our children.”

The school prides itself in prioritising such days, keeping learners engaged, and having learners see that there is a community of parents behind them.
