‘Rapist father’ on the run

MIDRAND - The Gauteng Department of Education said a pupil who is believed to have been repeatedly raped by her father for months, has been removed from her home and taken to a place of safety.

The issue came to light after the little girl from Kaalfontein Primary School revealed to her teacher that she was being sexually abused at home. The teacher reported the issue to school authorities.

The department’s spokesperson Phumla Sekhonyane said, “We have reported the matter to the police and the child is now in a safe place and is receiving counselling.

“The Children’s Act obligates an educator or the school to report abuse disclosed at the school, regardless of whether it took place outside the school.”

Ivory Park police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Neldah Sekgobela, confirmed that a case of rape had been opened. “The suspect is still on the run, but the child has been placed in a place of safety. Anyone with information on his whereabouts, please contact the police.”

Officer Sekgobela stressed that families should be careful when leaving children with their fathers or uncles for a long time. “Many cases involve males committing crimes against little girls, some children are not safe in their homes. If you are a neighbour or teacher and witness such abuse, please do not be silent. Your anonymous tip-off could save a child.”

To report any information related to this case contact Ivory Park Police on 011 990 9600.
