Time to inspire the youth

MIDRAND - Managing director of Matoto Technologies, an IT company based in Midrand, believes businesses have a chance to uplift young people in the community.

James Matshubeng said businesses can assist young people who are unemployed or out of school in Midrand. “I have given some young people a chance to get involved in the company, to see if they are interested in IT. If we all helped each other start off our careers, few people would be in so much poverty,” he said.

Matshubeng started his business in 2009 and says all it took was the decision to sit at the Midrand Library and work from there, without office space. Looking back, he knows he made the right decision to start a business, as Matoto Technologies has now been nominated for the Talk Radio 702 and Sage One, Small Business Award 2014.

He stated that young people are already hooked on technology, IT companies should give them a chance to find out if they can have a career in IT. “I got a chance to do a project with Halfway House Primary School, it was amazing to see young people so eager to use computers, and they know a lot [more] than we think.”

Matshubeng is planning to give children from a children’s home a chance to spend a day learning about IT. “Our community can only progress if we all put our resources together and help those who do not have many opportunities available to them.”
