New kennels for the prison’s dogs
KYALAMI - After a 10-year courtship with Kyalami Race Track, in August, avid racing driver and Porsche South Africa’s CEO, Toby Venter finally managed to acquire the iconic racing track.
After this record-breaking deal, the brand has already begun the process of sowing their seeds for good in the Fourways community. With good intent, Porsche SA attempted to donate dog kennels to a shelter – only to find out it was phony.
The kennels are being built by Porsche SA body shop staff in their spare time. Porsche SA group manager, Owen Roberts said they were initially uncertain as to what to do with the kennels they had built. Already having an existing relationship with Leeuwkop Prison, the company decided to donate the kennels to them.
The prison currently houses 34 trained guard dogs. The dogs are used in narcotic drug busts. To date, two dog kennels have been built, and because it is a time-consuming process, the company has committed themselves to building two kennels every month.
After all the kennels are constructed for each dog on the prison grounds, Roberts said, “We won’t end the relationship there. We do it for the love, we are neighbours and we want a good relationship.”
Dog handler at the prison, Anvor Schooney said it’s a great initiative. “We also [train] unwanted dogs as long as they fit the criteria and are in good condition,” he said.
