Jason Mraz visits local food garden

MIDRAND – Jason Mraz, a Grammy Award winning American musician paid a visit to The Dischem Foundation Community Food Garden.

This was while Mraz was on an early leg of an international tour promoting his new album, Yes!

Mraz is a man of many talents and interests. He is a dedicated farmer, singer/songwriter, photographer, filmmaker and surfer. During his visit to the food garden, Mraz brought his skills as a farmer into the spotlight.

Penny Stein, founder of The Dischem Foundation said Mraz spent a significant amount of time speaking to her about the technicalities of maintaining produce farms and gardens. “Showtime brought [Mraz] out here to South Africa. We were delighted by his interest in our food garden,” she said.

Mraz is widely known to be a passionate advocate for encouraging sustainability projects around the globe. According to Stein, the musician’s primary reason for visiting the garden was to gain insight into how Dischem were managing a sustainable food project.

Stein said, “The Dischem Foundation is happy to host Jason. What he tries to encourage is a passion for sustainable community projects. This vision of his is perfectly aligned with our vision as an organisation.”

Mraz toured South Africa for the first time and played three shows, two at the Teatro in Montecasino and one at the Grand Arena, Grand West in Cape Town. After selling out iconic venues such as Madison Square Garden in New York and the O2 Arena in London, Mraz decided to play more intimate venues to better accommodate his fans.

The artist said, “A theatre is where good music is experienced. It feels like a sacred space. I’m committed to playing venues where everyone has a good seat.”

Yes! is the artists fifth studio release and his first fully acoustic album. “It’s taken me years to develop the right songs, musicians and arrangements,” he said. “The songs are about healing, faith, our role in the environment, acceptance, compassion and letting go.”
