Bikers ride for Mandela

FOURWAYS - This year, Bikers for Mandela are riding through South Africa in the name of change for their sixth consecutive year.

It all began on 16 July, as bikers joined Zelda la Grange and an entourage of celebrities in their annual drive through the country.

The group will travel from Johannesburg and will hand over whistles to all the organisations they visit along the way in support of Blow The Whistle, an anti-rape and -woman abuse organisation which aims to empower women and children by giving them a platform to have their say and feel safe.

“Bikers for Mandela Day was launched so that South Africa’s large biker community could pay tribute to Mandela,” said La Grange. She explained that bikers do this by making sustainable differences to the communities which they pass through. According to La Grange, “…we are travelling to remote areas to advocate change.”

The bikers stop in a number of locations during their journey through Beaufort West, George, Knysna and Graaf Reinet, with a final stop in Bloemfontein.

During these stops, they will support local community organisations by doing repair work on buildings, tending to vegetable gardens, entertaining children and putting up structures. These organisations range from support for abused women and children to poverty alleviation organisations.

“Madiba strongly believed that small acts of kindness could change the world for the better,” said La Grange. And her Bikers for Mandela journey seeks to do just that, year after year, in the name of the legacy Mandela left behind.
