Cresset House creates agricultural entrepreneurs

GLEN AUSTIN - Cresset House is doing their bit to fight poverty and unemployment in communities around them.

The Glen Austin-based home for intellectually disadvantaged individuals is having an impact on the local townships through their organic food production programme.

Eleven unemployed women are the beneficiaries of the three-month programme that is set to finish by the end of August. “The women are from the communities of Kaalfontein, Allandale, Ivory Park and Ebony Park,” said the house’s CEO, Merilyn Pick,” stated Pick.

“The programme is being anchored by the house’s qualified in-house agronomist, Samuel Rwodzi, who is also a strong believer of organic farming.”

She expressed her gratitude to the National Lottery for funding the programme. “It is the first of its kind this year, for our non-profit organisation. The house gives the trainees stationery, protective clothing and everything else they need to ensure they undergo the theory and practical components of organic farming.”

According to Pick, the agricultural programme is aimed at eradicating unemployment and poverty in the lives of South African citizens and communities at large. The CEO said the trainees will be awarded certificates at the end of the programme to enable them to find employment elsewhere.

“Rwodzi, the entire Cresset House and I wish that the trainees will also be able to train their fellow community members and practically have organic gardens in their respective communities,” said Pick.

“Over and above this, we believe in farming that is environmentally friendly and also provides sustenance for the individuals and communities.”
