Boulders area in Halfway House falls quiet as shops close

Most businesses around the Boulders Shopping Centre in Midrand are closed amid the nationwide anti-illegal immigration protests.

Most businesses surrounding Boulders Shopping Centre in Halfway House remained closed on June 30 as protests linked to illegal immigration continued across parts of the country.

A strong law enforcement presence, supported by private security companies, was visible throughout the area. Police and security personnel conducted stop-and-search operations on vehicles while monitoring the situation to maintain law and order.

Although Boulders Shopping Centre remained open, several businesses inside the mall had also closed their doors as a precaution.

Outside the centre, about 90% of neighbouring shops were not trading.

Despite the uncertainty, some informal traders continued operating. Street vendor Michael Ndaba said he decided to trade with only a limited amount of stock to minimise potential losses should the situation deteriorate.
