Midrand police celebrate women
MIDRAND - Midrand Police Station killed two birds with one stone on 14 August.
To celebrate Women’s Month, the police handed out pamphlets at three of Midrand’s major shopping centres. The pamphlets contained information on the prevention of crimes against women and children.
Constable Matome Tlamela, head of communications at Midrand police, said one of the shopping centres where pamphlets were handed out was Midway Mews Shopping Centre.
“The aim of the campaign was to mainly address crimes against women and children but [police] took the opportunity to address theft out of motor vehicles as well.”
The campaign started at 10am and ended around 12pm. Tlamela said shoppers were also informed about safety in their homes in order to avoid break-ins and robberies.
She said, “The campaign was a huge success and the community was delighted to see the police visibly around them. They were also glad to know about other services being offered by us.
“About 1 500 pamphlets were distributed.”
Nico Venter, property manager of Midway Mews Shopping Centre, said they were more than happy to assist the police after receiving their call to hand out pamphlets at their shopping complex.
“We appreciate their presence and raising awareness within the community,” said Venter.
“I think their support though these occasional social drives will assist in discouraging criminal elements in our communities.”
