Hawks investigate cop murder, no arrests yet

IVORY PARK – Suspects block police's path and shoot dead an officer

The Hawks are investigating the murder of 32-year-old Ivory Park police officer, Constable Tshifhiwa Evans Manyuwa, who was shot and killed in the line of duty on 2 April at about 3am.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Carol Mulamu said Manyuwa and his colleague were on duty following information about a hijacking and attempted murder case in Ebony Park. Mulamu explained, “[Manyuwa and his colleague] noticed a group of people standing and blocking the road. Constable Manyuwa got out of the vehicle to ask them to move out of the way.

“One of the men pulled a firearm, pointed it at Manyuwa as the officer approached the people blocking the road, and shot Manyuwa in the upper body. Constable Munyawu was declared dead by paramedics at the scene.”

Mulamu said officers of the Ivory Park Crime Prevention unit provided backup and chased the suspects who fled in different directions. “No arrests have been made yet. The Hawks are investigating the case and are following up on possible information.”

Manyuwa worked at Ivory Park Police Station as a detective and had eight years of service. A memorial service was held for him at the station and he will be laid to rest on 9 April in Limpopo.

Ivory Park police spokesperson Warrant Officer Neldah Sekgobela said Manyuwa was known by his colleagues as someone who was dedicated to his work. “At the memorial, Station Commander Brigadier Frank Mthombheni mentioned that he last saw the deceased at the police station two hours before he met his untimely death and it is sad that he was seeing him for the last time. He further mentioned that Detective Manyuwa will be dearly missed.”
