Dogs walk it off for SPCA

WATERFALL – The Midrand SPCA received support at the Outdoor Expo for their fundraising dog walk.

The Midrand SPCA received an unprecedented number of participants at their annual dog walk.

“We had 54 dogs on leashes at the walk and all the proceeds in the form of entrance fees that were collected during the walk, were given to the SPCA,” said the animal rights association’s chairperson, Brenda Lucas.

She extended her gratitude to the organisers of Outdoor Expo for generously offering them the space to stage their walk. “We would also like to thank the general public for showing up. We nearly doubled the attendance from last year, which was 27 participants. We hope to keep growing from here onwards,” she said.

Lucas said the SPCA was currently filled to capacity and the R4 020 that had been raised would go a long way in providing for the 150 animals in their kennels during the winter months.

Shelley Shearer, one of the organiser’s of the expo, said they were more than willing to help the SPCA with their walk. “[Lucas] and her team are such dedicated individuals [in looking after] the well-being of these animals that we had to welcome them to the expo,” she added.

Shearer said she was not only happy with the record-breaking attendance during the dog walk, but with the overall expo. “We had a lot of fantastic exhibitions,” she said.

The expo also held a dog dancing competition in which many of the four-legged patrons participated.

Organisations also came out to educate the general public on the great outdoors. Brenda Roche, founder of Tree Tags, a botanical company that is focused on the preservation of trees said, “Although I am a teacher by profession, I am passionate about identifying and naming trees. It has turned out to be a great hobby,” said Rocher.
