Schoolgirl wins R10 000 bursary

IVORY PARK –- Omo gives primary school girl a R10 000 bursary.

A Grade 5 schoolgirl at Mikateka Primary in Ivory Park was awarded a whopping R10 000 bursary and her school was given desks on 28 November, in the Omo Fast Kids app competition.

The 10-year-old Mapula Ramohlola is one of the 184 000 youngsters who use the app to enhance their maths skills. She scooped the bursary after making significant progress in maths as a result of using the app since the beginning of the year.

Omo assistant brand manager, Aderly Reddy said that the Fast Kids community grows at an average of between 100 and 150 new sign-ups every day. “South Africa may have one of the lowest maths literacy rates in the word, but we’re extremely tech savvy,” she said.

“Our market boasts an impressive 37 per cent to 45 per cent mobile penetration. Omo made a decision to develop an educational, yet engaging app for today’s tech-savvy learners,” she said.

Attending the handover at Mikateka Primary School were representatives from the Department of Education, Extrupet, Wildlands, Rural Waste Poverty Alleviation and Unilever.

In addition to the bursary, Omo also handed over 40 upcycled green desks to Ramohlola’s school. The desks are a result of Unilever’s ongoing partnership with Wildlands that also includes the upcycling of previously unrecyclable plastic and multi-layer waste into school desks and chairs.

Mikateka Primary School principal, Mandla Sibanyoni said that he was honoured that one of the schoolgoers had won the bursary and desks. “Initiatives like this afford learners the opportunity to learn maths so that they become better thinkers who can solve our problems. Let’s not forget the teachers who play a big role in ensuring that our learners actively participate in maths.

“We are blessed to have this new furniture that will go a long way to enhance the culture of learning at our school.”
