Public warned to be vigilant when making purchases online

MIDRAND – A number of cases of fraud have been reported at the Midrand Police Station recently.

The spokesperson for the Midrand Police Station Sergeant Matome Tlamela would like to warn the public about the increase in cases of online fraud occurring in the Midrand area.

“We are having a lot of people coming in and reporting crimes where they tried to purchase a vehicle or rent a property online but found that they had been conned,” said Tlamela.

“We advise people to rather purchase cars through dealerships where they can see the vehicle they would like to purchase and not only a photograph of it online.”

He added that one of the complainants who reported a case this week said they were looking for accommodation and paid R5 000 into an account through an Internet transfer, but never heard from the person again. The complainant had been speaking with the ‘fraudster’ from 15 April until 6 May, when the payment was made.

Tlamela also advised people to be vigilant and verify details before paying.
