Man nabbed with hijacked vehicle and R5 assault rifle

MIDRAND – The perpetrator refused to stop when he was instructed to by the Metro police during their routine patrol.

A 37-year old man, with a hijacked vehicle and an unlicensed R5 assault rifle, was arrested in Ivory Park on 23 April.

The suspect, from Edleen in Kempton Park, allegedly refused to stop when he was instructed to by the Metro police during their routine patrol.

The Johannesburg Flying Squad was called for backup and he was caught after a car chase on Freedom Drive in Ivory Park Ext 2. The Mercedes-Benz he was driving was reportedly hijacked in Benoni.

He was found in possession of an R5 rifle, two magazines and 68 live rounds of ammunition. The serial numbers of the rifle have been filed off. Ivory Park Police Station commander Brigadier David Ngcobo has welcomed the arrest.

“The arrival of the two Metro police officers in our crime-ridden area can be described as a godsend. The arrest of the suspect is a big blow to crime. We further want to thank the Johannesburg Flying Squad for rushing to the scene as we all know that policing is teamwork,” said Ngcobo.

He has been detained at the Ivory Park Police Station, pending his appearance at the Tembisa Magistrate’s Court soon.

“While the possession of an R5 and a robbed vehicle are already pointing to the seriousness of the matter at hand, the police are already hard at work trying to establish whether the suspect may be linked to other crimes.”
