The Ivory Park police have welcomed the sentences handed down to two men from Kaalfontein for the theft of Eskom cables.
Eric Maphosa (26) and Honest Ncube (25) were sentenced to three years each by the Tembisa Magistrates’ Court for the crime committed in February this year. The men were found in possession of 5m of Eskom cable worth about R15 000. They were also found in possession of tools used to dig up and cut the cables.
Their conviction brings the number of suspects convicted for cable theft to four through investigations by the Ivory Park police in the past two months.
In May, two other suspects, Simbarashe Ncube (32) and Thomson Sibanda (26) were convicted and sentenced to three years direct imprisonment by the Tembisa Magistrates’ Court. They were caught digging up Eskom cables in Kaalfontein in January this year.
Ivory Park Police Station commander Brigadier David Ngcobo said, “The inconveniences caused by theft of cables have been well documented — from electricity cut-offs to traffic congestions. It’s an economic crime that must be fought with all that we have. These convictions will send a clear warning to all involved in similar crimes.”
