Midrand police arrest man for stolen goods

MIDRAND – A man was arrested after he was found in possession of a stolen motorbike engine.

Patrolling police officers arrested a man in President Park in Midrand on 1 August after he was found in possession of a suspected stolen motorbike engine.

“Suspect known as Augustine Mphunzi (22) was spotted by police carrying a plastic bag with an engine inside. The police were suspicious and decided to stop and search the man, which resulted in an engine being found when the police realised that the engine number had been scratched off,” said the Midrand police acting spokesperson Constable Thabiso Selowa.

Selowa revealed that the suspect alleged that he had received the engine from his father which led the police to request the contact details of his father. “When the father was called by the police, he denied giving his son an engine,” she said.

Mphunzi appeared in the Midrand Magistrates Court on 2 August for his bail application but it was and he was sent to the Johannesburg Central Prison. He is expected to appear in the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court on 7 August.

Details: Midrand Police Station 011 347 1626.
