Be careful when buying second-hand cars, Midrand police warn

MIDRAND – Police have warned residents to be careful when purchasing second-hand vehicles and urged them to confirm legalities by visiting their nearest licence department to avoid becoming a victim of criminals.

A 43-year-old suspect was arrested on the New Road on-ramp from the N1 by Midrand police on 27 August for vehicle cloning and fraud.

Midrand Police Station spokesperson Sergeant Matome Tlamela said, “Police were conducting a roadblock when a suspicious-looking vehicle was stopped and searched.

“The licence disc was found to be fraudulent and when the licence plate was checked on the system, police found that the vehicle had been deregistered.”

A vehicle is deregistered when it has been impounded and taken off the road because it was ruled to be unroadworthy.

“The driver of the vehicle claimed that he had bought the vehicle from someone else who did not disclose that the vehicle had been deregistered.”

The driver of the vehicle was arrested and appeared in court on 28 August but the case was not placed on the roll due to insufficient evidence.

Police have warned residents to be careful when purchasing second-hand vehicles and urged them to confirm legalities by visiting their nearest licence department to avoid becoming a victim of criminals.
