A man from Ivory Park Ext 2 is expected to appear in the Tembisa Magistrates’ Court on charges of common robbery, possession of an unlicensed firearm and 15 rounds of live ammunition.
The firearm was allegedly stolen from a security officer who was overpowered by three men during a robbery at a Kaalfontein supermarket on 16 September.
Ivory Park Police Station spokesperson, Captain Bernard Matimulane, said the victim saw the suspect in the vicinity on 17 September and alerted other community members and followed him. While he denied knowledge of the robbery, the firearm was found in his possession and the serial numbers had been filed off. Police then arrested the man. The search is still on for the two accomplices.
Ivory Park police Commander, Brigadier David Ngcobo, commended the residents’ efforts in apprehending the suspect.
“We are glad that the firearm that would have further inflicted terror on innocent members of the community will find its way to its rightful owner,” said Ngcobo.
Ngcobo further thanked the community for not resorting to mob justice.
