Five suspects were arrested in the early hours of 30 October in connection with a business robbery in Ivory Park Ext 2.
The robbery took place several months ago during which the shop owner was shot dead and his assistant wounded.
The five suspects – four men and a woman – were arrested by a police team comprising members of national crime intelligence, Ivory Park crime prevention, Ekurhuleni K9 and the Johannesburg Metro Police Unmarked Freeway Unit.
“The team received intelligence that the group responsible for the deadly business robbery at a store owned by a foreign national were located at various addresses in Ivory Park and the nearby areas. During that robbery an undisclosed amount of cash and airtime vouchers were taken,” said the spokesperson for the Ivory Park Police Station, Captain Bernard Matimulane.
He added that during the operation which took almost six hours, the police found an unlicensed firearm with its serial number filed off and 14 rounds of ammunition. “Investigations into whether this group may have been involved in other robberies in the area are continuing.”
The commander of the Ekurhuleni North Cluster, Major General Vincent Leshabane who was part of the operation welcomed the arrests and commended the multi-disciplinary team for the excellent work done. Leshabane also instructed the team to leave no stone unturned.
“All the information gathered will be followed and their cell phones will be taken in for downloading because these are not the kind of people we want to take chances with,” said Leshabane.
The suspects are expected to appear in the Tembisa Magistrates’ Court.
