The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) said in a statement that they are disturbed by the robbery at Khulasizwe Primary School in Tembisa, this morning 21 November, where several types of electronic of equipment were stolen.
Gauteng MEC for Education Panayza Lesufi said, “According to the information at our disposal, the school’s alarm system was triggered by the burglary, which alerted the armed response, who in turn notified the police. It is so unfortunate that the perpetrators had already left the premises when police arrived.”
The items stolen included 41 laptops, 25 desk-top computers, 25 tablets, two servers, two projectors and R1900 petty cash.
A case has been opened with the local police and investigations are ongoing, the estimated value of the stolen items is over R500 000, according to Lesufi.
He added, “The department is extremely concerned that valuable resources in schools which are meant to enhance the delivery of quality education to our learners are seen by some as an opportunity to feed their criminal deeds and rob our learners off their right to quality basic education.”
Lesufi said that Gauteng schools are hunting grounds for criminals and urged members of the community to work collectively with law enforcement agencies and come forward with any information to ensure that the perpetrators are caught and justice is served.
