Conversations with Men event in Midrand addresses gender-based violence

MIDRAND – Former NPA director Pumeza Mafani spoke at the gender-based violence discussions and said victims of rape have complained that they were being sent from pillar to post.

A panel discussion, Conversations with Men, at the Vodacom head office in Midrand discussed the role of men in helping curb the scourge of gender-based violence on 27 November.

One of the main discussions were about what men can do to assist and change. Gender activist Nomboniso Gasa said that in order to have a conversation on gender-based violence, men have to start by accepting, without being defensive, that they are the problem.

Former National Prosecuting Authority director Pumeza Mafani added that victims of rape and domestic violence have complained that they were being sent from pillar to post when it came to reporting their misfortune and that the police, prosecution and doctors were not helpful.

Mbuyiselo Botha said that the silence around gender-based violence is predicated in the notion that the violence will only happen to someone else and added that the responsibility should be on men and boys – not women.
