Upgrade right on track

NOORDWYK – The upgrade on 9th Road in Noordwyk is on track with the storm water system for the first 600m almost complete.

The work on the 9th Road upgrade in Noordwyk has been moving smoothly as the contractors finished with the majority of the stormwater drainage system.

The project has been in progress since its official sod-turning led by the former City of Johannesburg Mayor Herman Mashaba in July this year. The upgrade follows a worrying period of accidents including one incident where a learner of Noordwyk Primary School was knocked down by a reckless driver in February this year.

Ward 112 councillor Lerato Mphefo said, “The only hold-up in the project was when it initially started due to the contractor awaiting permits from the Johannesburg Roads Agency. But the project is moving well.”

Mphefo added that she had had regular meetings with the contractors and was very happy with the progress made.

Community liaison officer for the project, Zwelakhe Nkosi said the 600m storm water installation was almost done and was expected to conclude by 13 December.

Following the installation of the storm water system, the contractors will begin roadworks on the 600m stretch. Nkosi added that they were still awaiting approval following an environmental impact study due to a wetland situated near the road.

He said the only hiccups that have arisen were due to intermittent thunderstorms. “We are right on track with the project. The community can expect a new road by next year as planned.”

The project will run until 20 December this year before contractors break for the festive season and will continue on 13 January next year.
