Officer injured following attack in Olievenhoutbosch

OLIEVENHOUTBOSCH – The police have calmed protesters down in Olievenhoutbosch following a female office sustaining injuries.

The provincial police are currently monitoring the Olievenhoutbosch protest after a female police officer was attacked.

National police spokesperson Brigadier Vishnu Naidoo said that the protests were calm from Tuesday but on Wednesday evening at 7pm, the protesters escalated leading to them throwing stones at the Olievenhoutbosch Police Station. Naidoo said that the protesters’ grievance stems from the high levels of crime in the area.

He added that during the stoning of the station, a windowpane was broken and a female officer was hit. The officer suffered minor injuries to her elbow.

The protesters proceeded to burn tyres along the R55.

Naidoo said that no arrests have been made and the situation has calmed down with police monitoring the situation consistently. The community met with Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant Colonel Elias Mawela and discussed a way forward.

He said that the police discussed the high levels of crime in the area and listened to a number of specific cases from the community. He added, “We told them that crime levels are not solely a policing issue. There are many underlying social problems that lead to the increases in crime.”
