Ubuhle Foundation recently donated sanitary pads to girls at Royal Christian Academy.
The Kyalami-based foundation also offered learners additional education about drug abuse and how to deal with problems learners go through.
The foundation was established in 2017 and it was registered as a non-profit organisation (NPO) last year. It is sponsored by I’m a H.E.R.R.S (Healing, Empowering, Restoring, Restoring and Supporting) girl from United States of America, Christian Family Church Unlimited Exploits and It’s Mei Designs.
Founder Buhle Mateko said she started the campaign based on her childhood experiences and how she struggled as a teenager, “I was adopted at an early infant age and I lost my adopted parents at a young age. Growing up was very hard, sometimes I could not afford to buy myself basic needs to survive.”

She added that her situation pushed her to help underprivileged young children, “My experience gave me the passion to take initiative and share the little that I have with orphans and vulnerable young children who cannot afford basic needs. I understand the pain of not having support from anyone hence I formed this foundation through my childhood experience because I believe that I am not the only one who went through such.”
Team leader of the foundation Natalie Noah shared her drug addiction story and how she stopped. Noah is currently living a drug-free life and she has been clean for six months, “I had a tough time growing up and smoking drugs became the only solution but I managed to find someone to talk to and the foundation also helped me break the addiction chain.”

Principal of the Royal Christian Academy Sibusiso Mabhena said she was very pleased about what Ubuhle Foundation did and she believes that it also came as an additional education to her learners, “I am thrilled by what the foundation did to our school because it is what we call empowering as this school promotes the behaviour of offering a helping hand. This came as a great surprise because they taught children something that will help them remain constant and focus on their education.”
The foundation’s future plans are to build an orphanage home, drug rehabilitation centre and a Montessori school. For this, year it will host a winter programme where they will donate blankets for the homeless, street kids and also school uniforms for learners.
