9th Road is still a work in progress

NOORDWYK – The 9th Road project in Noordwyk is expected to finish by the end of June.

The 9th Road upgrade project is 40 per cent done and is expected to conclude by the end of June.

Managing director of the Johannesburg Road Agency, Siya Nodu said, “Overall we are about 40 per cent complete.”

Nodu said that the project is behind by 35 days due to an outstanding permit from the Department of Water Affairs which was requested in October but has still not materialised due to system problems.

The outstanding authorisation that has slowed the upgrade was previously reported in the Midrand Reporter article Work in progress for 9th Road [Week ending 21 February].

Nodu said, “We want residents in the area to be patient with us on this project. We want to finish it within the financial year as not to lose the budget that we have allocated to the project.”

In terms of the influence of the coronavirus outbreak, Nodu said that all JRA sites are closed for now. The 9th Road upgrade project began in July last year following a sod-turning hosted by former executive mayor Herman Mashaba.

The gravel road had been a problem for years with a lack of traffic calming measures and reckless driving that has allegedly led to numerous accidents.
