Over 40 people arrested for contravening lockdown regulations in Midrand
MIDRAND – Mayor Geoff Makhubo joined the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department operation to enforce lockdown regulations.
Officers from the Johannesburg Metro Police Department arrested 42 people for contravening lockdown regulations on 11 April.
Mayor Geoff Makhubo joined the JMPD as they conducted a roadblock on the corner of the R55 and R562 in Olifantsfontein as part of their stop-and-verify operation.
The mayor’s spokesperson, Mlimandlela Ndamase, said that the mayor joined the operation as he has been working closely with JMPD to enforce regulations relating to the national state of disaster announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa.
“The roadblocks are intended to stop and verify motorists who are on the roads and to ascertain their reasons for being out.”
Makhubo said during the roadblock, “We are preparing for the peak, we don’t think we’ve reached the peak yet so we’re trying to prevent us from reaching there. In order to do that, people need to stay home.”
Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar, spokesperson for the JMPD, said, “The roadblock was to check the people who were out on the streets who couldn’t prove why they were on the roads, either going to do shopping or on duty doing essential services or if they could produce permits.”
