Making A Difference South Africa comes to the Midrand SPCA’s rescue
MIDRAND – The organisation's CEO said that there is a need for communities to come together and support animal shelters such as the SPCA.
A local non-profit organisation donated one tonne of dog food and 75 litres of bleach to the Midrand SPCA in this time of financial uncertainty.
Making A Difference South Africa (Mad SA) delivered the goods to the local SPCA’s offices on 2 April to help them face a time of difficulty during the coronavirus lockdown period.
Chan Naidoo, founder and CEO of the organisation, said, “The SPCA is not getting their regular support from donors during the lockdown. The SPCA sent out an appeal as they were running out of supplies and this provided much-needed aid during the difficult period.
“There is a need for our communities to come together and support animal shelters such as the SPCA, over and above the support that is being provided to people during this difficult time. Our collective support will assist everyone to get through this time.”

Pam Pretorius, general manager for the animal shelter, thanked Mad SA and said they have been absolutely amazing. “Words cannot express how grateful we are. We have dogs, cats and rabbits as well as our resident goat, Gilbert. This food will definitely last us for the lockdown period and we will also be able to disinfect our kennels for longer should the lockdown continue after the 21 days.”
She added, “Covid-19 has affected our society drastically, we aren’t able to do fundraising or make income. Our clinic for vaccinations had to stop, as well as adoptions, so financially it has crippled us. We still have our overhead expenses which come to over R600 000 a month.
“Without any income coming in it is very stressful for our society – we need to carry on helping animals out there.”
Pretorius said they must still to pay their staff who work hard to clean all their kennels and the inspectorate team who are still handling emergencies and performing proactive inspections in the field.
She encouraged people to donate, “Companies are still able to deliver essential services to us, but we would plead to the public, please support us financially, as I said, we have got running expenses to worry about because we need to carry on doing the work we are doing.”
