Covid-19: Make sure you practice good hygiene measures

JOBURG – World Health Organisation (WHO) has highlighted a set of guidelines for people to use when wearing a mask.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has highlighted a set of guidelines for people to use when wearing a mask.

Christine Francis, a consultant for infection, prevention and control with WHO, said that a mask alone will not prevent a person from contracting coronavirus. She said that it needs to be combined with hand hygiene and other preventative measures.

Francis explained that those who choose to wear a mask need to ensure they discard of it properly and clean their hands with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand sanitiser.

Dr April Baller, who works with the WHO emergencies programme explained that people can practice good mask hygiene in the following ways:

• Before putting on a mask, clean hands with alcohol-based hand rub or soap and water.

• Cover mouth and nose with mask and make sure there are no gaps between your face and the mask.

• Avoid touching the mask while using it; if you do, clean your hands with alcohol-based hand rub or soap and water.

• Replace the mask with a new one as soon as it is damp and do not re-use single-use masks.

• To remove the mask: remove it from behind (do not touch the front of mask); discard immediately in a closed bin; clean hands with alcohol-based hand rub or soap and water.
