Help feed the Lipizzaners during lockdown

KYALAMI – Community members are urged to support the South African Lipizzaners Centre during the lockdown.

Members of the public are urged to consider donating funds to help feed the South African Lipizzaners during the lockdown period.

Director of the South African Lipizzaners Adriaan van Wyk described the South African Lipizzaner Centre in Kyalami as, first and foremost, a non-profit company dedicated to the preservation of an ancient and historically significant breed of horse as well as being steadfast in the continuation of the art of classical dressage.

Van Wyk said, “We achieve these ends through the mediums of education and entertainment, the public performances of the SA Lipizzaners sustain the horses and allow for the continuation of the 72-year South African legacy.”

Van Wyk explained that the lockdown would have a potentially devastating effect on the centre.

“As our primary source of income, temporary closure of performances is proving financially devastating. Our horses still need to be cared for during this difficult time. Furthermore, even once lockdown has ended, social distancing and event restriction will continue until the pandemic is over.”

The centre is not expecting to have any performances or events for the rest of the year.

“We are hugely grateful to people that have already donated to us. We have received bags of food, grass, as well as monetary donations. No support is too big or too small and we would be so grateful for any help, monetary or otherwise, that we can continue providing for our beloved herd.”

Community members can also select the South African Lipizzaners as their preferred charity as part of the Woolworths Rewards Programme.

The South African Lipizzaners team, located in Kyalami, currently have 36 stallions at the centre and 26 mares and youngsters that are at stud.

If community members are able to donate to their upkeep costs, email stallion@lipizzaners.co.za or call 079 716 4792.
