Deppe and donors feed 170 families in need

KAALFONTEIN – Residents are urged to continue donating food and hygiene products for those in need at the Vorna Valley SPAR.

Ward 132 councillor Annette Deppe and generous donors have delivered 170 food parcels to families in need in the area during lockdown.

Areas of delivery included Kaalfontein, Rabie Ridge, Noordwyk, Klipfontein View, Vorna Valley, Halfway House and Barbeque Downs.

Deppe thanked security companies, NGOs, churches and generous community members for their assistance, which made this possible.

“The need is so huge and it is only going to get worse as we stay under lockdown. Many have no jobs, no income, no food. They go to bed hungry and wake up hungry,” said Deppe.

“As long as I have energy and strength, I and my colleagues will make a plan to help them.”

Deppe said that while this was a once-off donation, she has tried to register people into the National Food Distribution Database, which should get them onto a sustainable programme. The national line is yet to respond to her requests.

“We will keep on trying and in the meantime, our donors will provide and assist where they can. If it were not for them, these residents and families would be starving.”

Deppe encouraged community members to donate items including mealie meal, rice, sugar, soya, salt, tea bags, baked beans, tinned fish, multipurpose household bleach, soap, long-life milk, oil and flour.

Donations can be dropped off at the Vorna Valley SPAR. Alternatively, monetary donations can be given to the Vorna Valley SPAR Relief Fund.
