Locals take a stand against gender-based violence
IVORY PARK — Community members created and handed over a memorandum to Ivory Park Police Station.
Ivory Park residents organised a peaceful march to protest the rise of gender-based violence in their community and across the country.
Community members created and handed over a memorandum to Ivory Park Police Station during the march on 26 June.
The memorandum outlined how the community members would like the police to be more involved in the community and also to allow the community to help fight the violence.
Organiser of the march, Thabo Mosethla, said he is humiliated by how men participate in the killing and abusing of women. “We want women’s security and protection to be a top priority to the police as we cannot take the law into our own hands. People have been demanding action from the police, hence, we decided to take a stand.”
He urged the police to take consider these matters as it will benefit the community.”The police must take proper action against the perpetrators who are charged with Phase 4 and 5 abuse.”
Brigadier David Ngcobo of the Ivory Park Police Station said he is willing to work with the community, “As we have received and signed the memorandum, we will assess it and answer to the demands of the community. We will communicate with them on the way forward and how we can involve them in this issue.”
The march was deemed a success and the engagement between the police and community members went smoothly.
