ICYMI: Midrand police bid farewell to pair

MIDRAND – The Midrand police bid farewell to Lieutenant Colonel Dolf Oortman who served in the police for 34 years and station cleaner Noria Nkuna who worked at the station for 16 years. The two staff members began their retirement from July.

Midrand police bid farewell to two long-serving staff members at the end of June.

Lieutenant Colonel Dolf Oortman retired after serving for 34 years in the police.

Reflecting on his time at the police, Oortman said he most enjoyed working in Paarl for three weeks detecting drugs and chemicals in containerised cargo.

He also thoroughly enjoyed a one-week trip to Dar es Salaam, where he was able to experience life in another part of Africa.
Oortman said that he is still undecided about what he will do during his retirement and he is considering moving back to the Western Cape, where he was born.
Oortman advised youth who want to take up a career in the police saying, “If they want to become a police officer, they must be responsible and lead by example.”

He also thanked Station Commander Brigadier David Tsotsotso for his leadership and reflected positively on his three and a half years at the Midrand Police Station.

Station cleaner Noria Nkuna also went onto retirement recently after serving for 16 years at the Midrand Police Station.
Reflecting on her time at the station, Nkuna said that she has never been in conflict with anyone. Her daughter described her as a people’s person and a problem-solver. “I enjoyed making sure the work environment was clean and that was my main responsibility,” said Nkuna.

During her retirement, Nkuna hopes to venture into business with her daughter and sell fruit and vegetables including avocados and watermelons from her farm in the north.

“I will really miss the colleagues I got to know at the police,” said Nkuna.
