Local schools have joined schools from across the country for the #TakeTheChallenge virtual series, encouraging teachers and learners to keep fi t and healthy.
With offi cial sport on hold at many schools, the #TakeTheChallenge is a way for the whole family to get active. Local schools including Curro Waterfall, Kyalami Preparatory, Carlswald House Preparatory, Brescia House, Dainfern College, Fourways High School, Summerhill School and more have taken on the challenge.
The competition includes a wide variety of sports including running, cycling, swimming, chess, golf, dance, horse riding, gymnastics, rowing and more. The aim of the challenge is to get learners and teachers active, healthy and building school spirit during this uncertain time. Challenges are set weekly for learners and teachers who will earn points for their schools if they achieve in those challenges.
A weekly leader board is then shared with all schools to invite competitiveness and school spirit. Each week will have a diff erent theme including the various sports, for example, the Olympic Games.
Founder Matt Quinn said, “What an incredible response to week one of the virtual interschools #TakeTheChallenge competition. We have had 3 500 participants from over 100 schools sign up. In week one of the Olympic Challenge, the kids racked up some impressive statistics. They cycled 3 560km, ran or walked 5 222km, swam 205km, did 6 330 minutes of gymnastics, played 504 rounds of golf and completed 7 830 minutes of tennis.”
The challenge looks forward to introducing themes including Tour de France, Spring, Women’s Week, dancing, Rubik’s cube and a road trip around South Africa to celebrate Heritage Day.
Organisers have also planned derby days, where schools will be able to compete against one another in set challenges and compete for bragging rights. They also look forward to hosting Zoom webinars with sporting celebrities including sprinter Akani Simbine, swimmer Tatjana Schoenmaker, Olympic gold medallist and world record holder Wayde van Niekerk and more.
