While the world, head on, faces these troubling times, it is uplifting to know there are days where happiness, appreciation and children’s laughter shine through.
Learners at The Matriarch Education Centre, a private school based in Midrand, took it upon themselves to demonstrate their love and appreciation for their school and teachers by organising an Appreciation Day on 21 August.
According to Laila Hernandez, the school principal, all the learners arrived, laden with flowers, plants, trees and seeds, as well as gifts, ready to give a little something back to the school that has given them so much.
“The day was spent blissfully happy by all with hands and feet, in the mud, as learners were in a rush to plant in time for spring. The school grounds had never looked so colourful and bright,” said Hernandez.
Hernandez concluded by giving thanks to everyone who made the event a success, “We as the Matriach would like to say thank you to the families and give a special thank you to Gerard Otto from Indigenous Scapes who donated a bakkie load of indigenous plants to the school.”
Nichola Blazeby, a Grade 8 learner at the school, explained on behalf of the other learners why they took it upon themselves to be a part of the school’s Appreciation Day adding that it was their chance to give back to the school and their teachers. “We all brought in plants and seeds during the week and then we cleaned, planted and tided up the grounds just so it looks clean when we enter the school.”
Blazeby concluded with some words of gratitude, “Thank you for putting all the time you do into each of us and putting all the effort into our schooling.”
