Spark keeps up with the Jerusalema trend

MIDRAND – This was definitely team work says Karen Bull, acting principal at Spark Carlswald.

Spark Schools has recreated the viral Jerusalema challenge and took to social media to challenge their fellow educators and scholars at Nova Pioneer School.

Eager to keep up with the trends, Spark Schools staff and scholars put their best foot forward after releasing a video on 10 September of them joining the rest of the world dancing to the hit song, Jerusalema by Master KG and Nomcedo.

Acting principal at Spark Carlswald, Karen Bull said that accepted the challenge after Spark Soweto recorded their video challenging another one of their schools in their network to do the same.

“Thus each school would challenge another school. We shared other school’s videos with our team and the teachers actually owned the entire planning process. We had one teacher choreograph the dance moves and then take a video of this so that we could all learn the dance. Because our fifth core value at Spark Carlswald is collaboration, we then had teachers who knew the dance moves well lead our practice sessions until we finally recorded our video. This definitely was a team effort.

“Our scholars, teachers, facilities and maintenance staff and supervisors all took part in the challenge. We did also have one of our parents who shared a video of her doing the dance at home with her two daughters which we also included at the end of our video.”

Bull added, “The words that I have for other schools is just to remember their vision and purpose and to ensure that that aligns with everything you do as a school.

“Our ultimate purpose as educators is to serve our scholars through access to quality education. If that is at the focus of every decision made, then one is already headed in the right direction.”

Co-founder and CEO of Spark Schools, Stacey Brewer said, ”In just one day, a few of our Spark scholars and educators prepared and recorded the challenge and nominated our other Spark Schools network to join in on the fun.

“We were very proud of the creativity and, what our staff and scholars had achieved in such a short period of time.”
