Upgrades to 9th Road resume following lockdown

NOORDWYK – The upgrades to 9th Road in Noordwyk are still under way and are currently 65 per cent complete.

The construction of 9th Road in Noordwyk is 65 per cent complete following a halt in work due to the Covid-19 lockdown.

Spokesperson for the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) Mosa Makhalima said, “Due to Covid-19, the site was closed since March to mid-June 2020 and this has impacted on the completion of the project. The contractor has been back on-site since June and is currently busy with the work. Additional costs were incurred towards standing time and wages for Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) due to Covid-19.”

“A great percentage of the road has been done. Base layer with kerbing and the paved sidewalk are underway. The rest of the section is at roadbed with dump rock and subsoil drain on the way. A total of 764m of stormwater pipe has been laid.”

Work that still needs to be done includes the installation of stormwater box culverts across the stream, guardrails and gabions, layer works and asphalt surfacing. Makhalima added that road markings and signage are expected to be added once the surfacing is complete.

The road upgrade project was initiated last year following a sod-turning by former executive mayor Herman Mashaba. There had been a number of accidents on the road due to lack of traffic calming measures and reckless driving as reported in the Midrand Reporter article Work in progress for 9th Road [Week ending 21 February 2020].
