Grade 12 learners from Kyalami Schools take a stroll down memory lane

KYALAMI – Kyalami Schools Matriculants usher the Grade 0s into Grade 1 before leaving for varsity.

Grade 12 learners from Kyalami Schools took a stroll down memory lane while also welcoming next year’s Grade 1 learners to the school.

As part of their tradition the Kyalami Schools, which consists of Kyalami Preparatory, Beaulieu Preparatory and Beaulieu College, held their annual Matric Assembly on 18 September.

The Matric Assembly is an event held annually to welcome the Grade 0s into Grade 1. Right before their final exams each year the Grade 12 learners, who started school at one of the preparatory schools, attend the Grade 0 graduation ceremony and hand the learners their certificates and share their experiences with the young ones.

Beverly Charlmers, head of arts and culture at Kyalami Preparatory, briefly explained how the event was brought to life this year despite the pandemic.

“They know the tradition as the Kyalami matrics return every year to host an assembly at the school. Unfortunately, because of Covid-19 restrictions this year, we could not invite them back.

“The matrics themselves then made contact with their friends from Kyalami – using Kyalami Schools social media platforms and word of mouth. The message got out that we were putting together a virtual assembly, the learners sent me their pictures and voice notes sharing their experiences at Kyalami Preparatory.”

Charlmers added, “We want the current Kyalami pupils to see how past learners have grown and for them to know that they too will be welcomed back when they prepare to leave school.”

David Hala, principal at Kyalami Preparatory School, bid farewell to the learners in the beginning of the video.

He added that this was a wonderful time as they are saying farewell to the matriculants they are also welcoming the new lively souls into their schools. “It is a wonderful experience,” he said.

“I would just like to thank the matrics. I know it has been a very busy and challenging year and you are preparing for exams. We have come very far learning many life lessons. I can assure you that if you can get through this you can get through anything.”

Charlmer wished the learners all the best for their futures and to hold true to the Kyalami motto, ‘Spread Your Wings’.
