Rabie Ridge resident raises his concern about a speed hump causing flooding
RABIE RIDGE – Rabie Ridge residents fed up after a speed hump causes their houses to get flooded whenever it rains.
A Rabie Ridge resident has raised concerns about a speed hump in front of his home which causes his house to flood whenever it rains heavily.
William Thabane said he had reported the issue for months without any success. He added that ever since the speed hump had been installed in January this year, it had caused problems for both him and his neighbour.
“After the speed hump was installed we had heavy rains between February and April,” he said. “The speed hump caused a waterlog inside our yards. After the heavy rains I reported this issue to the Johannesburg Roads Agency’s [JRA] website. I did not see any action.
Thabane added, “We then had heavy rains around 14 April, I sent an email with a picture of how our houses have been affected and still nothing was done. All I received was a reference number for reporting the matter.”
Thabane explained that the street goes downhill and their homes were slightly below street level. Therefore, when it rained heavily the water flowed down the road and when it reached the speed hump it got directed into their houses.
Jabu Sibanda, who lives next door to Thabane, said the water seeps into his house through the front door and flows out the back door. “Since the installation of this speed hump, it seems as if it was installed to block the water from flowing freely down the street. Because there is no drainage system the water gets blocked thus redirecting into our yards,” he added.
Sibanda claimed his furniture and belongings had been damaged because of this issue.
JRA spokesperson Kelebogile Mafa said their traffic engineering department did carry out an on-site inspection to determine whether the speed hump would have to be removed completely or repositioned.
Mafa confirmed on 13 October that upon carrying out their inspection, they had approved the removal of the speed hump. “Our teams at the depot are scheduled to attend to it,” she added.
