Reddford House Blue Hills Junior Preparatory School displayed an array of art on 13 November at their annual art exhibition.
At this year’s exhibition, learners in grades 1, 2 and 3 displayed their many creative works.
Tracy Lee Kurten, school coordinator and an educator at the school, explained they were able to pull from different influences of various art and artists around the world.
“We were able to host a variety of different styles of art. Even when we were limited and online, our curriculum still continued and our children have been able to showcase their talent and their creativity. We are very proud of them,” added Kurten.
“There is a huge variety and a different classification of art concepts that are being done, from contemporary, abstract, pop art. We pulled on various artists like Salvador Dali, Andy Warhol and Wassily Kandinsky styles.”
Fezeka Mpela shared her artwork, an octopus in tribal sketches. She said that her art was inspired by her teacher who helped her. “We did an art feature which our teacher showed us. It took three days to make and it was a lot of work to do it. I had to put in a lot of effort,” said Mpela.
With the help of their teacher, the young artists collaborated to create Starlight Hidden Boy – a portrait of a boy wearing goggles and lying on the floor with his hand over his forehead as if he is hiding. Livhu Phaswana, who presented the artwork to the Midrand Reporter said that they did it in class.
“Ms Kurten knows a lot about art. She made this portrait and asked if we could help her, so we did the painting. The picture is a boy hiding under a train house, kind of. It is inspired by the Grade 3s, art and just going free with art because art is just great, it’s kind of like maths, it’s easy,” said Phaswana.
Phaswana concluded he wants people to understand the love and friendship portrayed in the picture.
