Councillor hopes to see major developments

MIDRAND – Stephen Makamo, who is a councillor for Ivory Park, shared his highlights of 2020.

Ward 78 councillor, Stephen Makamo hopes the new year will see major developments in the ward.

Makamo, who is a councillor for Ivory Park, shared his highlights of 2020 saying that the rollout of 240-litre refuse bins was one of them, as this success would minimise illegal dumping in the area.
“The renovation of Lord Khanyile [community hall] was done successfully, eight faulty transformers were replaced in the ward, and the launch of Kleena Jozi which managed to permanently eradicate illegal dumping spots is a major success.

“Establishment of a process for informal settlement de-densification and the provision of water tanks and chemical toilets to the informal settlement as a response to Covid-19 is one of my biggest highlights as well,” said Makamo.

Makamo also touched on some of the lows saying that streetlights which have been off for more than three years have been a worry as they contribute immensely to crime. “The [blow-ups] of Eskom transformers which left communities without power for three to four months was a problem. Same goes for the non-construction of speed humps in the ward.

“I hope next year our informal settlements are de-densified and communities get electricity. I also hope to see the finalising of the 240-litre bins rollout.

“With that being said, I would like to wish the communities in Ward 78 a Merry Christmas and thank them for working with me in this difficult time of Covid-19. It has not been an easy year, some succumbed to this virus and others have since recovered.

“The virus is still living with us. Let us continue to adhere to Covid-19 regulations. Wash your hands regularly, practise social distancing and wear your mask in public. I am looking forward to working with you in the new year.
