PAP encouraged by Africa’s fight against Covid-19

MIDRAND – The Pan African Parliament wishes you a happy New Year and Merry Christmas.

The festive season is upon us as well as the new year.  The Pan African Parliament (Pap) has shared their overview of the year and what they look forward to in the new year.

Clerk for Pap, Vipya Harawa said this year has been marked by the coronavirus outbreak. “The Pan-African Parliament was encouraged by how the African continent has been mobilising to face and win this unprecedented health war as a collective.
“In the midst of this crisis, Africa’s parliament played a key role through its various meetings, in calling for a deeper reflection on the common challenges that the continent faces in a global environment and in order to come up with solutions for the continent in the areas of development, health, digitalisation, sustainability, jobs for young people among others,” said Harawa.

Harawa added that due to the lockdown, they were not able to host many of their essential meetings to discuss activities for various committees. “The parliament also holds committee meetings where members meet within the various thematic committees to discuss relevant matters.

“Due to the coronavirus outbreak and in line with lockdowns measures around the continent, Pap was unable to hold these crucial engagements. This is one of the lows this year. The parliament will resume all activities including statutory engagements in 2021 as part of its mandate to serve the peoples of Africa.”

Harawa said Pap was grateful to South Africa for all the facilities accorded to the Pan-African Parliament since its establishment in 2004. “We are especially grateful to the people of Midrand, for graciously welcoming and hosting the Pan-African Parliament.

“We wish continuous prosperity and good health to the people of South Africa and the Midrand area.”

Harawa, on behalf of the Pan-African Parliament, wished a happy festive season and a prosperous New Year for the African continent.
