New Life Centre for Girls struggles to raise funds

PRESIDENT PARK – New Life Centre For Girls reaches out to residents and businesses to help out during this difficult time.

The financial effects of coronavirus has left New Life Centre for Girls in a state of despair as they try to ensure they have enough funding to keep the home running.

The non-profit and public benefit organisation has been working to better the lives of children since it was founded in 2005 in Hillbrow. The centre moved to Midrand in 2009 and cares for children who have been abused, orphans and those who are vulnerable.

Founder Khopotso Nakin said though the initial idea was to begin an outreach programme for these children, shortly thereafter she realised there was a need to create a home for girls. “I was responding to the high influx of young women and children in Hillbrow who were forced into prostitution,” said Nakin.

“I could not sleep knowing someone is being forced into prostitution, especially young, helpless children. I then responded by offering a hand to those who were willing to change and a home to children in need of love and care.”

She added that the Covid-19 pandemic had put an incredible amount of pressure on the organisation. “Running a home has been very difficult and our problems keep on piling up, transporting children to school has been a mission along with getting food for the children’s lunch boxes and clothes as well as funds to run the centre.”

She said they have been struggling to get funds from the government, and any help from the community and businesses would be welcomed as they need financial support to pay for rent, staff, transport and the upkeep of the property.
